When we talk about bedding, there are many individual items that make up this category. Each such individual item requires special attention and care for their upkeep.
Bedcovers
This is the top most layer of the bedding. Bedcovers are usually used for décor and are layered on top of bedsheets and blankets. Bedcovers should be washed every once a week. Check the label of the product carefully before washing. Unless the label specifically provides for dry cleaning, most cotton bedcovers can be gentle machine washed using warm or cold water. Do not use hot water as it may cause shrinking and damage the fabric. Use a mild detergent and remember to soak before washing.
Bedsheets and pillow cases
Bedsheets support the entire body and end up absorbing a lot of dust, sweat, oils, make up, products etc. Hence it is mandatory to wash bedsheets and pillow cases at least once a week. Soak them in detergent and warm water for a few minutes before washing. Avoid hot water since it can damage the fabrics. Tumble dry and lay them out in the sun to dry. Avoid direct sunlight. If the sheets have delicate trims, lace or embroidery, do make sure to check the label for washing instructions. Make sure the sheets are completely dried before storing them back. It is also a good idea to iron the sheets for a smooth finish.
Pillows
While washing the pillow case once a week is recommended, pillows should be regulary fluffed to maintain loft. Washing pillows once a year is a good idea. While pillows are usually dry cleaned, some can be machine washed also. Check label for instructions.
In case of machine wash, make sure to use warm or cold water with a mild detergent. Do not use hot water. Also make sure to rinse at least thrice to ensure the soap can completely drained. Spin an extra time to extract as much water as possible.Ensure that pillows and completely dry before storing them. Drying pillows can take upto eight hours.
Blankets and dohars
Blankets and dohars are sturdy but they can get pretty dirty too. These can be easily washed at home unless the label instructions mention otherwise. Please dry clean if the blankets or dohars have lace or applique work.
In case of machine wash, make sure to use a mild detergent in warm or cold water. Like other bedding, it may take quite a while for your blanket or quilt to dry, especially if it has thick batting.
Quilts and comforters
It is not recommended to wash heavy quilts and comforters frequently. Maybe once every several years. Use a professional laundering. Too much laundering can lead to excessive wear and tear—plus greatly decrease performance. Instead use a cover and wash that as needed. Shake your quilts and comforters weekly to keep them down from bunching up. Air it outside in direct sunlight when feasible to keep it fresh.
